Techniques for Structural Imbalance Correction

Double Knot Foot Stretch & Peroneal StretchDouble Knot Foot Stretch & Peroneal Stretch

  • This is the basic stretch in knee joint Osteoarthritis
  • In knee joint OA – the defect in the foot is that, the foot is inverted and planter flexed
  • Normal foot is at 90° angle with the leg which is lost in knee joint OA
  • With the help of ropes the foot is stabilized, with eversion and holding the foot at 90°
  • Over lengthened short muscles are brought back to normal.

Tibio-Fibular SeperationTibio-Fibular Seperation

  • Sitting in chair over a prolonged period keeps both thighs nearer to each other with flexed knees
  • This posture results in contraction of these muscles narrowing of medial compartment of knee joint
  • Therefore to relieve knee pain these muscles must be lengthened towards hip
  • This will separate thigh bone from leg bone
  • This stretch extends all adductor muscles and gracilis towards hip (pubis) around the head of thigh bone, separates lower end of thigh bone from upper end of leg bone
  • Four muscles are adductor Brevis, Longus, Magnus Pectineus which are attached to pubic bone (hip) spread over the entire length of inner side of thigh bone.

Lateral Arch LiftLateral Arch Lift

  • Muscles spread over outside of leg attached to fibula are known as Peroneus longus, Brevis, Tertius
  • They lift the outer border of foot (eversion) & bend the ankle (planter & flexion) towards floor
  • These muscles exert pull on the outer side of the leg which leads to distort alignment of knee joint
  • It results into lifting of inner border of foot (inversion) & tilting of leg on the Fibular side (peroneal tilt)
  • This defect is further exaggerated due to imbalance between muscles on front & back of leg
  • This defect reduces space & results in friction between bones in the knee joint & produces pain
  • Therefore to correct the space inside knee joint, these muscles must be brought to their normal status by ‘leg stretch
  • This corrects the posture of ankle.

Knee LockKnee Lock

  • This lock stabilizes the knee joint
  • Thigh end turns outward while the leg end turns inward
  • This is executed by muscle especially popliteus which locks knee joint in extension
  • This will widen the medial compartment and pain in knee joint will be reduced
  • This removes the lateral tilt of the leg, keeps medial condyle of leg bones in fixed position, separates medial condyle of thigh bone from leg bones
  • Removes pain while walking.

Hamstring stretchHamstring stretch

  • This stretches the hamstring, as hamstrings are short, they fix the pelvis and do not allow any movement in hip around the head of the femur.
